The first 10 days
April 2019
And the rest of April was a blur..
The day that we got home from the hospital we had a lot of visitors. Aunt Suz and Uncle Tom came by in the afternoon.
Annie came by for a quick yellow & all of her family too.
Grandma & Grandpa and Uncle Rick (who was in town for a visit) and then
Naomi and the boys came by and also got to open their Easter baskets.
That was an unexpected busy day. I really could just not believe that you were out side of me and that all of this was real and how quickly our life had changed.
We had lots of friends who brought over dinners and got to meet our Teryl. Dad went back to work the day after you were born and I felt quite overwhelmed and had no idea what I was doing.
We had to go to the clinic when you were 2 days old and they were amazed at how well you were doing, but then we went back for a 4 day visit to the lactation specialist and you had lost a lot of weight. They decided that we needed to feed you every three hours ATC. This is not what it sounds like.... For example I feed at 9pm - the actual feeding - getting a good latch, making sure baby is not sleeping on the job and that we have the right positioning - takes about 30minutes, then burp - 5minutes, change a diaper - 5 minutes, swaddle - 3minutes, rock the baby to sleep - 10minutes. Then get myself to the bathroom - 20minutes, brush my teeth and wash my face - 10minutes, take some pain meds and try to get into bed to fall asleep. Then I maybe fall asleep for 45minutes before I hear someone (baby girl) or my alarm go off and have to start it all over again at midnight.
So much crying, so little sleep, and mostly I wondered if this was going to last forever and that I surely was not going to survive. (Thankfully I am writing this a year latter and have the proof that it did not last forever and I was able to feed my baby and give her everything she needed) The days were the hardest when Steve went to work and it was just Tenley and the baby and I at home - no work, no school, just learning a new skill that I didn’t feel like I was good at.
First photo shoot was in our bedroom when our girl was just 6 days old (your umbilical cord fell off that morning before she got there). Amy Grebe came over and got some amazing photos... I love them.
I loved watching you and hearing your little grunts. You had scrawny little legs and arms that would flail around until we swaddled you up. My milk came in quickly - even more than you could eat, so we started storing it up for later.
And you had lots of dark hair, but it was like an old man and you had advanced male pattern balding. And your skin was so dry and flaky, but of course your were perfect and right where I wanted you - in my arms.
